Makhosi’s Story of Change

I have faced many challenges in my life. Since 2015, the father of my children had been abusive towards me. He would physically assault me, and there were times when I had to go to the hospital because of my injuries. I'd try to get support, but no one would help. Life was not good.

I was the one responsible for buying food for the family. My children were receiving child support grants, but I still could not afford their school fees. As a result, the school would withhold their report cards.

I first went to the Women’s Desk, a small space in my community run by trained local women, in 2025 to seek help with the domestic violence in my household. I returned a few months later to ask for assistance because my children were not receiving their school report cards.

The Women’s Desk provided me with support and helped mediate between my partner and me. Things have been better since then. My children are also back in school and even able to receive their school report cards.

There is life now at home. I can breathe. Before, I felt suppressed, but now I have more peace at home and feel a sense of freedom. My family is able to come together and eat dinner together.
