Across Our Global Community: Partner Updates
From knowledge exchanges across borders to growing recognition in local media and hands-on learning in communities, our international partners continue to make an impact. Here’s a look at some of the recent work happening across South Africa, Uganda, Angola, and Kenya—and how our partners are sharing knowledge, strengthening communities, and advancing women’s rights to land, housing, and livelihoods.
Socio-Economic Rights Institute (SERI) in South Africa & Shelter and Settlements Alternatives (SSA) in Uganda
Shelter and Settlements Alternatives (SSA) travelled from Uganda to Johannesburg, South Africa, for a week-long learning exchange with the Socio-Economic Rights Institute (SERI) and the Inner City Federation (ICF) Women’s Desk. The visit focused on sharing knowledge and approaches on women’s land and housing rights, access to justice, and community organizing.
Throughout the week, SSA participated in workshops on women’s legal and property rights, learned about the newly launched ICF Women’s Desk, and visited inner-city communities to see how women are supported through consultations, mediation, referrals, and legal assistance. The team also connected with Women’s Desk volunteers and referral partners, gaining valuable insight into community-led approaches to addressing housing and other challenges faced by women.
The exchange provided an opportunity for two-way learning, with SSA sharing experiences from its work in Uganda while learning from approaches being used in South Africa. The team returned home with new knowledge, stronger partnerships, and practical lessons to carry forward in its work advancing women’s rights to land, housing, and livelihoods.
Development Workshop (DW) in Angola:
The Women’s Spaces project is making headlines in Angola! Local media outlets are shining a spotlight on the important work being led by our partner and the impact the project is creating for women and communities. These features are helping bring greater visibility to women’s land and housing rights and the progress being made through the project.

Mazingira Institute (MI) in Kenya:
Mazingira Institute recently created a video showcasing the incredible work taking place at its Urban Agriculture and Food Systems Demonstration Unit in Nairobi. Through the Women’s Spaces project, the Demonstration Unit has become an important space for hands-on learning, providing women and other marginalized community members with practical skills in sustainable urban farming and food production.
From learning new growing techniques to exploring ways urban agriculture can strengthen livelihoods and food security, participants are gaining knowledge they can apply within their own homes and communities. The Demonstration Unit is helping turn learning into action while creating more opportunities for women to participate in and benefit from Nairobi’s urban food system.
