2024 Young Professionals International Placement Program


Rooftops Canada is seeking qualified candidates to participate in our 6-month Young Professionals (YP) International Placement Program with the Women's Spaces project in Angola, Kenya and Uganda.

Eligibility: Open to Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents of Canada between the ages of 18-35

Terms and Conditions: Rooftops Canada’s terms and conditions allow you to lead a healthy and modest lifestyle similar to local living standards. The program’s support package will cover basic living expenses for one YP for the 6-month placement period. Placements will take place from May/June to November/December 2024.

Support Package:

  • Monthly living allowance

  • Accommodation while in placement

  • Medical Health Insurance (including the cost of required vaccinations and medication)

  • Round-trip airfare and visa/work permit costs

  • Pre-placement training, in-country orientation and reintegration debriefing

  • Support while in placement through Rooftops Canada’s staff and local partners

  • International development experience with an opportunity to expand your networks

Selection Requirements

If you are selected for a placement, you will be required to:

  • Confirm Passport or Permanent Resident details for travel purposes

  • Provide 2 professional references

  • Obtain a satisfactory police check

  • For placements in Angola, proficiency in Portuguese is an asset (not required)

The placement positions include:

Rooftops Canada Board of Directors is seeking skilled and passionate individuals as it enters an exciting and transformative phase. We are currently looking for two new Board Members to replace our current vacancy, one from CHF Ontario and the other from CHF Quebec. Successful candidates must be nominated through their organizations.

About Rooftops Canada:

Rooftops Canada-Abri International (RC-AI), the international development program of Canadian co-op and social housing organizations, has 40 years of experience and partnerships in the global south, including over $30 million in Government of Canada project funding. It has helped influence policy and develop highly innovative practices related to housing development, management, and finance; local economic development; linking urban food security, urban agriculture, and housing spaces; while consistently mainstreaming gender equality, human rights and participatory governance.

The Opportunity:

Integral to this period of transformation, we are seeking two new members to join our Board of Directors. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a dynamic period of change and growth at Rooftops Canada. As a board member, you will play a crucial role in guiding our organization through this pivotal transition. Your involvement will be instrumental in shaping initiatives that are not only impactful but also embody our commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression, equity, inclusion, and decolonization.

Our aim is to attract proactive members who not only enrich our organization’s diversity with their unique perspectives, but also firmly believe in and advocate for a gender equality-based, decolonized, anti-racist and anti-oppressive approach. These members should demonstrate a strong commitment to our mission, embodying our values through effective governance and oversight.

Our board is composed of members with a diverse array of skills and experiences, representing different Canadian cooperative, housing areas and members at large.  We are currently seeking to enhance this skillset. In our current recruitment, we’re interested in candidates who specialize in one or more of the following areas:

1.       Finance (A CPA, CA designation or equivalent is a significant asset)

2.       Fundraising

Director expectations include the following:

  • Attend board meetings and Annual General Meeting (every 2-3months)

  • Commit to a 3-year term as Director.

  • Take a position on at least one of the Board committees: Governance and Strategic Directions, Finance and Fundraising and Communications and Marketing.

  • Dedicate at least 10 hours a month to Board committees and activities.

  • Digital Proficiency: computer and technology skills for efficient electronic communication and document preparation, as this is primarily a virtual role.

  • Assist with fundraising efforts to fuel continued growth of Rooftops Canada.

  • Approve the annual budget, audit reports and review activities as presented in the financial reports.

Skills:

  • Previous involvement on a Board of Directors an asset

  • Demonstrated professional, executive or leadership experience and accomplishments in business, government or the non-profit sector.

  • Knowledge of international development funding

  • Experience in strategic planning

  • Experience in fundraising

  • Strong understanding of financial reports and/or experience in non-profit accounting

  • Board Meetings are conducted in English and therefore the successful candidate will need to be proficient in English.
