Rooftops Canada continues to champion the vision of a world where everyone has a secure place to live in peace and dignity. Through decades of global partnerships, transformative housing projects, and collaboration with Canadian co-ops, we continue to advance housing rights both locally and internationally.
In commemoration of the International Year of Co-operatives 2025, Rooftops Canada recently facilitated a learning and engagement session with Stanley Knowles Housing Co-op (SKHC). The session highlighted Rooftops Canada’s past and present, footprint across the world, and our Women’s Spaces project. sparking meaningful dialogue on core housing themes. Participants explored the meaning of home, the benefits of co-operative models, the challenges of life in in informal settlements, and ways that Canadians can support housing rights around the world. The discussion also drew important parallels between housing issues in Canada and the Global South, including land access, affordability, and social inclusion.
Key takeaways from the session include how sharing best practices globally strengthens local community development, while international experiences offer valuable insights into diverse housing challenges. Participants emphasized the importance of advocacy and engagement in co-operative housing as members of the Co-operative Housing Federation Canada. They also identified several ways Canadians can contribute to global housing justice, such as promoting co-operative models, participating in housing rallies, donating to relevant organizations, and engaging political leaders.
As housing inequality grows worldwide, Rooftops Canada’s work reinforces that global solidarity, sustainability, and dignity must guide collective efforts. We remain committed to advocating for and supporting co-operative and community-led solutions that address housing challenges both at home and abroad.
