Young Professional Alumni Q&A: Brianna Mersey’s Journey
What are some memorable moments from the Young Professionals program?
One of Brianna’s most memorable moments from the Young Professionals program was the incredible opportunity to connect with people who shared the same passion for social change and community development. Her placement with the Kuyasa Fund in Cape Town, South Africa, a housing microfinance organization, was unforgettable. What was meant to be a six-month placement ended up being extended because of how meaningful and rewarding the experience was.
Brianna had the chance to learn about South African culture and community dynamics. She was also able to put her academic background in microfinance into practice in a housing context. Another highlight of the program was the friendships she formed with colleagues and fellow YPs—connections she still maintains today.
What lessons and perspectives did you gain from the program?
From the program, Brianna learned more about the important role women play in supporting their families and communities, even when they face long-standing unfairness. Seeing the everyday challenges of poverty, like not having basic supplies, was both humbling and eye-opening. The experience showed her why it is so important to support women and communities that are often left out of traditional financial systems. She also saw firsthand how women keep households running, despite being undervalued. Overall, the program helped her appreciate the strength, leadership, and impact of women in disadvantaged communities.
What path has your career taken since your time in the Young Professionals program?
Since participating in the Young Professionals program, Brianna initially pursued roles in international development, women’s rights, and microfinance. However, she found opportunities in these areas were limited. This led Brianna to pivot back to her undergraduate background in computer science, where she built a career in digital analytics and data. Today, Brianna’s role is VP of Data for North America at a consultancy, leading teams in analytics, data engineering, and data science.
What lasting impact has the program had on you?
The Young Professionals program inspired Brianna to settle in South Africa, and she now splits her time between Cape Town and Vancouver. Through the program, she built a home, relationships, and a community in South Africa. Brianna continues to apply the lessons she learned by staying aware of inequalities, supporting local workers with jobs and resources, and remaining engaged with former colleagues. Overall, the experience shaped both her personal life and the way she approaches her work and community involvement.
