Young Professional Alumni Q&A: Toussade Souag
Q: How would you describe your overall experience with the program?
A: The entire experience with Shelter and Settlements Alternatives (SSA) in Uganda was deeply impactful. I had always wanted to learn more about East Africa, and the program gave me that opportunity. One of the most memorable moments was meeting a woman who, with the support of paralegals, was able to reclaim her property from her in-laws. Reading about impact in reports is one thing, but witnessing it firsthand is an entirely different feeling. Interviewing Nairuba Monic, the Senior Assistant Town Clerk of Kamuli Municipality, was especially inspiring—she was among the first women to benefit from a government initiative supporting girls’ right to education.
Q: What did you learn from working with international and local partners?
A: Working with both international and local partners greatly expanded my understanding of the diverse challenges and solutions in development work. International partners contributed technical expertise and funding, while local partners brought deep contextual knowledge, citizen mobilization, and culturally grounded approaches to problem-solving. This experience reinforced the importance of centering marginalized communities’ voices as co-creators of successful urban development.
Q: How did the program shape your career interests?
A: The program reinforced my passion for humanitarian work and international development. While it has not directly influenced my career path yet, I hope it will in the future.
Q: What personal reflections stood out for you during the program?
A: The program made me more aware of my own privilege, and I am deeply grateful. It also highlighted the importance of working closely with local partners to achieve meaningful and lasting impact.
Q: Do you still stay connected with people you met through the program?
A: Yes, I am still in touch with some former colleagues from the host organization, as well as individuals I met from other organizations in Uganda.
