Africa Regional Activities

Rooftops Canada is an innovator in South-South regional networking in sub-Saharan Africa. It supports the linking up of key organizations and practitioners focused on the critical issues confronting the urban poor in Africa – housing and land rights, empowerment, civic movements, gender equality and HIV/AIDS.
The Settlements Information Network Africa (SINA) promotes networking and the sharing of experiences among housing and human settlements NGOs in Anglophone Africa. SINA also advocates for recognition of the right to housing and carries out campaigns against forced evictions. Its several hundred members are engaged in all aspects of housing and community development as well as health, nutrition, and employment projects. SINA publishes an information-packed newsletter, organizes regional activities and runs a website devoted to housing and human settlements issues.
Rooftops Canada supports the Anglophone and Francophone Africa regional activities of the Habitat International Coalition – Women and Shelter Network (HIC WAS). HIC WAS member organizations work with low-income communities to promote women’s access to land, housing and inheritance rights regionally and worldwide.

Rooftops Canada is assisting HIC WAS to train para-legals to promote women’s access to land with communities and local authorities in Tanzania. In Francophone Africa it is helping set up Land Consultation Clinics to support individuals and communities fighting evictions and seeking secure land tenure.
