News and Resources

Dear Friends of Rooftops Canada,

Our recent “Tanzania: Building Homes, Building Lives” and “Support Young Professionals Build Skills” on-line campaigns were a very encouraging success. We raised $41,670!

We are grateful that you consider our work worthwhile. And we could not have managed without the wonderful support of our 46 fundraising volunteers – our sincere thanks to you all.
This year – as we continue to ask for your support – we are committed to strengthening innovative housing microfinance programs in Tanzania, Kenya and Zimbabwe.
With support from Canadians, we have helped the Zimbabwe housing co-op movement increase services to its members. Over the past year, 159 homes have been completed and 102 are under construction.
In Nairobi, Kenya, working with the National Cooperative Housing Union (NACHU), McGill and Kenyatta Universities, we are examining how decent housing helps mitigate or prevent violence against children. NACHU also recently completed 52 houses – Phase 1 of the Faith Foundation Housing Co-op. Click here to see a short video about the co-op by Kenyan National TV.
Equally exciting is the work we are doing with WAT-Human Settlements Trust in Tanzania. With support from across Canada 1,001 loans have been issued for land and housing- 57% to women. We are helping WAT to scale up to meet the needs of people like Fikilia Lumliko Lwanzali.Click here to learn more about Fikilia.
This year, I was also able to witness the wonderful work our social housing partners are doing to rebuild Johannesburg’s inner city. We are very proud to be helping them with communications, community development, green building and urban regeneration.
Once more donations made to our annual fundraising campaign will go even further. Rooftops Canada is in the second year of a five-year matching funds agreement with the Canadian International Development Agency. Every dollar contributed turns into four dollars in the field. That means a $100 donation has the impact of $400 in funding to improve housing conditions.
Your contribution of $50, $100 or more today means we can continue to help African housing groups build homes and communities for women and families who are striving for greater independence. Your contribution can be made through our website – click on Donate Now – or by cheque and mailed to 720 Spadina Avenue, Suite 313, Toronto, ON.
We would like to wish you, your family and friends best wishes for a happy holiday season.
Jo Ferris-Davies, President, Rooftops Canada
PS: Please accept our apologies if you have already received our fundraising campaign letter by post.
