CIDA Partnership with Rooftops Canada Renewed

News and Resources

Rooftops Canada is very pleased to announce the approval of a new five-year, $5-million agreement with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). This agreement will allow us to work with our partners to build homes and sustainable communities in Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and South africa.

Our target is to reach 90,000 households and over 450,000 slum dwellers in the sub-Saharan region.

Generous contributions from co-op and non-profit housing groups and individuals are critical to Rooftops Canada’s ability to achieve our target. These contributions play a significant role in meeting our contribution commitment to CIDA to match every three dollars with one dollar of our own.
The agreement will also support our Canadian public engagement program which complements our overseas development efforts, establishing a link between housing issues in Canada and overseas. It will continue to rely on our wonderful volunteer network to deliver outreach education across Canada.
Our 2011-2016 plan will broaden access to housing microfinance for poor urban families in sub-Saharan Africa. An estimated $20 million in small loans will help 8,000 families, particularly women-headed households, secure better living conditions. The new plan will also step up housing support services and continue to mainstream responses to HIV/AIDS. It will promote urban food security and focus on women, youth, the environment and livelihoods.
Special thanks to our overseas and Canadian partners and our partners in CIDA who all worked hard to renew the agreement. We look forward to working together over the next five years.
