We are very excited to announce the launch of our 2016 online campaign Urban Farms Grow Homes.  Urban gardens are springing up all over cities and towns across Canada. They provide a healthy local alternative to the food we buy at big grocery stores. In the slums of Nairobi, Kenya, people grow food and raise livestock on small bits of land to alleviate hunger, fight poverty and build homes.

Rooftops Canada and its long-time partner Mazingira Institute in Nairobi have been encouraging this trend for a while. This year we are asking for your help to train and support 125 urban farmers to plant crops and raise livestock. Urban Farms Grow Homes will give families access to nutritious food, generate additional household income to escape dire poverty, improve living conditions and help them to access loans to build a new home through our co-op housing microfinance programs.

To think it all starts with a few square metres of dirt and you.  With your help and the support of Rooftops Canada, Mazingira Institute will train 125 urban farmers, mostly women, over the next two years. Training, ongoing support and mentoring will cost $400 per farmer. That’s a very modest investment to change a family’s life forever. Just watch the remarkable story of urban farmer, Ruth Kamau.

Please join Rooftops Canada as a volunteer fundraiser and help us reach our goal to raise $50,000 to support 125 farmers in Nairobi to plant crops and raise livestock. For every $400 you raise, you will be helping a family to escape poverty and creating a path of prosperity for the 70% of Nairobi’s children living in urban slums. We encourage you to also recruit friends and family to join our amazing team of volunteers.

No letters to write, phone calls to make or doors to knock on. All of the online materials you need for your personal website, including email templates, are ready. We will process the donations made on your behalf and keep you up to date on your progress.  All you need is an address book of emails and a passion to bring hope and prosperity to families waiting to embark on building a bright new future.

Please register on as an Urban Farms Grow Homes volunteer today or contact Thandi Nkomo at 416-366-1445 or thandi@rooftopftops.ca to register.
